Why You Need to Start Building a Strong Foundation for Long-Term Business Success

building a strong foundation for success

In this episode of Aligned & Ambitious Radio, we’re talking all about how to treat your business like… well… a business! It’s time to get serious about getting your sh*t together and building a strong foundation for success – because without a solid foundation, the rest of your house (or biz) is going to sink.

Now, I want you to buckle in because this is going to be a serious conversation. And this is maybe going to bring to light some things that make you go, “Oh sh*t… maybe I'm not doing that. Maybe I need to tighten this up. Maybe I need to take this a little bit more seriously.” And the reason that I want to talk about this is because a lot of things business owners put off are the things that can actually catapult you forward.

There are so many fun and flashy things when it comes to growing our business that a lot of times, we like to start with the fun stuff. But if your sh*t is not together at the foundational level, you're not building to scale.

Are you doing what you said you wanted to do?

The first thing I want to ask you is a simple, but BIG question: are you doing what you said you were going to do in your business? Are you taking your business seriously? Are you going all in?

We all have those tasks that we think of from time to time, but then they just fade off into the distance. You know the ones: “Oh yeah, I'm going to hire that team member,” or, “Oh yeah, I’m going to set myself up with that project management software.

You get what I’m saying. These things that fade away are usually the things that you know are going to help sustain you to scale. You have an awareness of them and you say you're going to do them. But are you doing the things that you said you were going to do? Because the more you resist these things, the longer it's going to take you to build this infrastructure.

There are so many things that are fun when it comes to business, and then there are the not-so-fun formalities of having a legitimate company. But you NEED those things to keep growing. Are these things as fun as, say, launching a new brand? Probably not. But are you building to scale when you do these things? Yes.

Choose to get your sh*t together.

In the beginning of your business, you likely feel like your resources and time are both so limited that you have to pick and choose what to work on. Well, I'm telling you right now, choose to get your sh*t together! Choose the sh*t that's going to set you up to scale successfully. Get your legal stuff in order. Get your bank accounts in order. And this can be a wake-up call because it makes you think, “Am I just playing around on Instagram, or am I building a company?” And that can sometimes hit you like a ton of bricks.

I'm not saying that building your business isn't going to be fun. We can still play around in our business. But there are things that we have to do, that we’re obligated to do as business owners, especially if you want to scale your business to a certain degree.

Get your infrastructure on point.

You know what I’m talking about: the legal stuff, the bank account stuff, the tech infrastructure. I'm not talking about fancy software here. I'm talking about like… do you have a business email address? Do you have your Google Drive organized? Do you have a project management software? Does the foundation of your business exist somewhere on the internet? Or do you just have a bunch of journals with ideas in them?

Now, there’s nothing wrong with having journals with ideas in them. But if you're building to scale, you know that you're going to be pulling a team in at some point, and you know that you're going to have to bring that into a shareable place. So it’s time to actually prepare for that.

Let me tell you, this was one of my big wake-up calls, because believe it or not, I am NOT the most organized person. My Google Drive was a mess. I had folders and documents everywhere. And then I started to grow my team and I wished I had thought about scaling from the very beginning, so I could have grown in a smarter, cleaner way. So think about the way you organize your ideas, your Google drive, your emails, the ways you want to communicate with your team. Think about the people you have in place and the people you need. Will your systems continue to work for you as you scale?

Get real with yourself.

So, here it is. The interactive part. The part where it comes time for YOU to do the work. I want you to get out your journal and jot down the answers to a few questions. These just might change your life, so get ready.

  • Am I doing what I said I was going to do?
  • Where am I not going all in on my business?
  • Where am I not taking my business seriously?
  • Where am I not treating my business like a business?
